Simulation of seismic damage of RC structures in eastern US
Additional Document Info
A normalized index for evaluation of structural damage was developed based on the relation of demand and capacity. The proposed formulation combines two sources of damage: permanent deformation and strength deterioration during dynamic events. The model was first calibrated based on component test data and then was used for a computer simulation of typical RC structures. Earthquakes in eastern US are sparse events and therefore artificial simulation of ground motion was used to enable an estimation of severity of expected damage. Results show the damage of framed structures near the epicenter can be catastrophic while it attenuates quickly at larger focal distances.
