IMPROVEMENTS TO SHALLOW WATER FREQUENCY DOMAIN MODELS Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • Frequency domain representations of the non-linear Boussinesq equations are being increasingly used to predict wave transformation in the nearshore region. Even after implementing improved dispersion and shoaling characteristics in these models, the prediction of third moments such as skewness and asymmetry are not significantly improved. Improvement of these quantities are especially important when the wave information is used to drive sediment transport models. In this article, other options to improve the third moments are explored. Specifically, three different options are studied. The first option is to retain all the non-linear terms, the second option is to solve both the continuity and momentum equation separately, and the third option is to use a different wave breaking mechanism. The first two options improved predictions in different parts of the domain whereas the third option did not significantly improve predictions in the surf zone. 2007 World Scientific Publishing Co.
