Behavioral management of chronic pain in children: case study. Academic Article

abstract

• Although chronic pain in children often has a clear etiology, environmental factors may influence the continuation of pain behaviors. The present study investigated socioenvironmental factors which influenced the pain behavior of a 3-yr-old girl subsequent to severe burns. Behavioral treatment strategies consisted of rearranging reinforcement contingencies so as to reduce pain behaviors and increase observed 'well' behaviors, including those related to orthopedic and physical therapies. The significance of the findings is discussed in terms of rehabilitating pediatric patients with chronic pain.
