abstract
The literature on the new psychiatric commitment laws is reviewed with regard to the issues of context, the dangerousness standard, due process and the effects of reform. It is concluded that the study of psychiatric commitment today suffers from intellectual anomie. Specific recommendations to restore intellectual order in the literature are made.
