An improved hydrostatic bearing configuration consisting of a conventional orifice compensated, contiguous, hydrostatic bearing augmented on one side by a ring with a smaller radial clearance is presented. Results for the leakage and rotordynamic coefficients of this asymmetrically stepped hydrostatic bearing are calculated using a numerical solution of the film-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Results of a parametric study on the effects of ring geometry and recess position on hydrostatic bearing performance are presented. The results show that the presence of the asymmetric step enhances the rotordynamic performance of an orifice compensated hydrostatic bearing.
