OCCURRENCE OF THE TOXIC DIATOM NITZSCHIA-PUNGENS F-MULTISERIES IN MASSACHUSETTS BAY, MASSACHUSETTS, USA Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The domoic acid-producing diatom N. pungens f. multiseries was isolated from Massachusetts Bay near Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Eleven clones of N. pungens f. multiseries were assayed for domoic acid in stationary phase using high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The domoic acid content ranged from undetectable to 021 pg cell-1. Nitzschia pseudodelicatissima was also isolated but did not produce detectable levels of domoic acid. The presence of these species in Massachusetts Bay indicates that at least one toxic diatom is present in waters adjacent to the Gulf of Maine and provides a possible explanation for domoic acid-contaminated mussels noted from Nantucket during January-February 1991. 1994.
