abstract
This paper outlines our recent experiences with mesh optimization and error estimation techniques on grids of triangles and quadrilaterals. The finite-element meshes are adapted by using refinement, remeshing, or a combination of both. The refinement or remeshing algorithms are combined with mesh enrichment into h-p-methods. Several algorithms for error estimation are implemented namely element-residual, flux-projection and extrapolation methods. Several model problems are used to demonstrate the various methodologies including scalar elliptic, parabolic, hyperbolic problems and the equations of plane linear elastostatics.
