Novel laboratory wear performance test for premium rails Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The Transportation Technology Center, Inc., in collaboration with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has developed a wear performance laboratory test for premium rails. The test consists of a ball-on-disk, which was developed under joint-funding by the Federal Railroad Administration and AAR. This test provides a viable alternative as a screening method to pre-select rails with higher wear performance for full-scale testing at the Transportation Technology Center, Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST), and in revenue service. The ball-on-disk and the full-scale test at FAST were conducted using premium rails with an average head hardness of 395 HBN. The test can be directly used by the railroad industry for initial screening of potential rail steels.
