NEON ETHANE DRIFT CHAMBER GASES Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • We have investigated the feasibility of using Ne:C2H6 mixtures, ranging from 18% to 50% Ne, as drift chamber gases. These gases have a long radiation length, which makes them attractive in cases where multiple scattering makes an important contribution to the overall resolution. We measured the drift velocities of the mixtures and tested them in a drift chamber to determine their efficiencies and position resolutions. We also studied Ar:C2H6 (50:50) with the same detectors to provide a basis for comparison. All of the Ne:C2H6 mixtures that we studied performed better than Ar:C2H6, with the best position resolution coming with the lowest Ne concentration. 1990.
