abstract
This paper provides a critical examination of gel placement in production wells. An analysis is developed using fractional flow concepts to determine the degree of penetration of gelants into oil-productive strata as well as into water-source zones. Variables examined include permeability contrast, oil/water viscosity ratio, initial oil saturations, relative permeability characteristics, and gelant properties. A near-wellbore simulator is developed to confirm predictions that are made using the theoretical model. This work demonstrates that gelants can penetrate to a significant degree into all open zones-not just those with high water saturations.
