abstract
This paper addresses the kinematic design and analysis of a special class of mechanical presses used for the deep drawing and ironing process in metal forming operations. The key design objectives for this type of press are to obtain a longer working stroke and a faster punch return. The resulting kinematic equations show that a horizontal quick-return mechanism exhibits the preferred characteristics. The behavior of this type of press is analyzed according to the placement of its links. The kinematics constraints are discussed and the design of press components to achieve better performance is summarized. Combined with basic numerical analysis, a simple graphical approach for kinematics can help students understand how various kinematic constraints can affect design optimization.
