  • Accurate and precise thickness measurement of a tbin-walled component is a challenging task. Traditional techniques often require expensive precision instruments to achieve high accuracy. This paper describes the design, prototyping, and testing of a low-cost, precision, non-contact thickness measurement device. Based on the concept of design for manufacturing and assembly, the proposed approach eliminates expensive precision machining and assembly processes in building the instrument. The measurement techniques rely on the integration of two precision capacitance probes and a simple calibration procedure. The applied research results showed that the gage capability is determined by the sensitivity of the probe and the Utterance of the calibration gage block. The prototype instrument is evaluated, and excellent repeatability and reproducibility are achieved. The case solution can be used in el mechanical design application course to demonstrate design for manufacturing and assembly practice.
