One of the fundamental principles of design for reliability is to simplify and standardize the design. Modularity is an approach for organizing complex products and processes efficiently by decomposing them into simpler subsystems. This paper presents an integrated modularization methodology to optimize the reliability and durability of product architecture early on during the concept development phase of product development process. Fuzzy logic approach is used to evaluate the reliability and durability performance indices (RDI) of candidate modules at conceptual stage. These RDI are eventually incorporated into a mathematical modeling framework to identify the optimal modules for a given architecture. A case example is presented to demonstrate the application of the proposed methodology.
