Supply chain modeling scope and methodology: A review of literature in the last decade Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • A growing number of firms are recognizing the strategic importance of planning, designing, and controlling the effectiveness of their supply chains to gain a competitive advantage in the current globalized market place. By recognizing this need, a large number of studies in the operations research and management science (OR/MS) have also addressed the challenges facing the supply chain management community. To this end, several papers have focused on modelling the various issues in supply chain (SC) management like forecasting, inventory control, the bullwhip effect, and transportation. Types of modelling, modelling tools, and analytical methodologies used have a pronounced impact on level of accomplishment of the SC objectives irrespective of the value chain under consideration. This paper presents a detailed analysis of 50 SC modelling papers selected from the key OR/MS journals in the last decade. It synthesizes SC modelling efforts in the past thereby identifying key challenges and opportunities for future research. It also provides some guidelines for future research in various aspects of SC modelling.
