Lasing without inversion via decay-induced coherence Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • A closed four-level system coupled with field reservoir was used to analyze continuous wave lasing without population inversion. Atomic interference of spontaneous emission based on pseudo photonic band structure doped by ions or quantum dots was considered to demonstrate the practical implementation of continuous wave lasing. The obtained gain was found to have lower threshold on incoherent pump as compared to the gain in an equivalent system without interference and with population inversion. Analysis suggested that pseudo photonic band-gap structure allowed the propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves with certain polarization and forbidded propagation of EM waves with orthogonal polarization.
