abstract
A study is carried out to clarify the influence of the field-induced modification of relaxation rates on the amplification without inversion (AWI) conditions in different three-level systems driven by a strong coherent field on the low-frequency (LF) transition and probed by mono- or bichromatic field at the optical transitions. It is demonstrated that the origin of probe-field gain and conditions of AWI is essentially different from the traditional results. A novel mechanism of AWI is also proposed. Finally, it is shown that the efficiency of this mechanism is enhanced due to the parametric interaction of the probe field components.
