Compression of γ-ray photons into ultrashort pulses Academic Article uri icon


  • A method of compressing frequency modulated Mossbauer radiation into sequence of short pulses is proposed. The ideology of chirped pulse generation and compression well known in optics is extended to the γ-ray range. Efficient frequency modulation of γ rays can be achieved by moving the Mossbauer source with alternating velocity while the chirped pulse compression can be accomplished due to resonant nuclear dispersion using far-detuned resonant absorber. This allows to obtain γ ray pulses much shorter than the natural lifetime of the excited nucleus from nuclear γ decay.
