CHALK RIVER HELIUM-JET ION SOURCE. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • A helium-jet coupled ion source has been built for the Chalk River on-line isotope separator. The source is characterized by slit geometry, small volume, large exit-to-entrance ratio, and high source temperature. To date, it has been tested with eighteen isotopes of twelve elements, ranging in halflife from 2. 2 s to 1 h. A source efficiency of between 1% and 10%, as compared to the yield of a helium-jet transfer system of similar dimensions, has been measured. Besides the good yield, the most noteworthy properties of the source are its insensitivity to the presence of helium and its fast response to a change in feed material.
