Decay studies of the new isotopes Hf162,163 Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The new isotopes Hf72163 [T12=40.0(6) s] and Hf72162 [T12=37.6(8) s] were produced in Nd60142 (Mg1224, xn) reactions and transported to a measuring station by use of the He-jet technique. Decay properties were observed with,, and - spectroscopy. The Z assignment of the new isotopes was based on a cross bombardment, Mg1224+Pr59141, and on results of -x-ray coincidence measurements. The mass assignment was deduced from measured excitation functions. Beta-delayed rays were identified, 11 for Hf163 and 3 for Hf162, and level schemes for Lu71163 and Lu71162 are proposed based on the results of intensity and - coincidence measurements. A small branch [I=0.0087 (-37+17)%] with a decay energy of E=4308 (10) keV was found in the decay of Hf162. The reduced width W=2.6(-1.2+0.6) for Hf162 is in accordance with those for neighboring nuclei. With the new Hf162-decay energy, mass values were derived for Hf72162, W74166, Os76170, Pt78174, and Hg80178. The new masses as well as values deduced for two-proton binding energies are compared with predictions of current mass formulas.
