Stress State Variables for Saturated and Unsaturated Soils Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • Currently many researchers consider that only one stress state variable and two stress state variables are needed for determining the behavior of saturated and unsaturated soils, respectively. A thermodynamic analogue to the consolidation of soil is used to demonstrate the need of a minimum of two stress state variables for both saturated and unsaturated soils. Some topics related to the use of stress state variables such as constitutive surfaces and constitutive laws and the governing differential equations for saturated and unsaturated soils are discussed. The stress state variables needed to describe the volume change behavior of both saturated and unsaturated soils are discussed. Copyright ASCE 2006.
