abstract
We demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing the so-called 'double-dark' scheme of four-level atomic coherence to obtain strong laser gain in the ultra-violet and vacuum ultra-violet. Furthermore, we show a new technique for eliminating Doppler broadening in a large class of multi-level ( 4) schemes. A specific application of these ideas to cw lasing at 253 nm and 185 nm in Hg is presented.
