CRYSTALLIZATION WAVES AT THE SOLID-LIQUID INTERFACE OF HE-4 Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • We report preliminary measurements of the dispersion and attenuation of melting and freezing waves at the solid-liquid interface of 4He for temperatures below 0.5 K. Both time of flight and resonance techniques were used to characterize the behavior of these waves. The measured dispersion agrees with the theoretically predicted form. The observed low temperature attenuation is found to be smaller than previously measured values. The kinetic growth coefficient K does not show a T-4 dependence as expected from phonons.
