abstract
The effect of vibrational non-equilibrium on the decay of grid generated turbulence was experimentally studied. Varying degrees of vibrational non-equilibrium were introduced via radio frequency plasmas. The turbulence was quantified using particle image velocimetry. The results, though preliminary, demonstrated a clear coupling between thermal non-equilibrium and turbulence transport. The trends observed in the experiment agree with those expected based on an analysis of the Reynolds shear stress transport equation, which provides confidence in transport equation based modeling.
