Hf3Te2: A New and Remarkable Layered Compound Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The synthesis of metalrich compounds can still yield fundamentally new compounds! Strongly metallic Hf3Te2, the first reduced hafnium telluride, is prepared from the elements. Its surprisingly simple, layered structure is formally related to that of bodycentered cubic (bcc) metal and contains three layers of hafnium in a bcclike arrangement sandwiched between double layers of tellurium. These slabs are held together by van der Waals interactions. (In the picture dark spheres represent Hf and light spheres Te.) (Figure Presented.)
