Molecular visualization in science education: An evaluation of an NSF-sponsored workshop Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • At the Workshop for Molecular Visualization in Science Education, chemists, cognitive scientists, chemical educators, and software developers met to discuss the state of visualization in science education. To evaluate the lasting effects of this one-time meeting of the minds, several surveys were prepared to inquire about participants' attitudes or behaviors before and after the workshop experience. The pre- and post-workshop surveys looked at changes in participants' definitions of molecular visualization. The post-workshop survey and one-year post-workshop survey looked at lasting effects. Analysis of the data revealed that the worhshop had a positive effect on participants' attitudes by initiating and then maintaining interest in topics discussed at the workshop, and has had some impact on participants' actions.
