abstract
In the present work, the gaseous and liquid decomposition products of 50 mass% hydroxylamine/water solution were measured for samples subsequent to a thermally induced runaway reaction. The noncondensable gas phase composition was approximately 70 mol% N2, 24 mol% N2O, 4 mol% NO, and 2 mol% H2, and ammonia was detected in the liquid residue, Based on analysis of the gas phase decomposition products, the following overall decomposition reaction (summation of several series and parallel reaction mechanisms taking place during the experiment) was determined: 157NH2OHliq 61NH3gas + 35N2gas + 12N2Ogas + 2NOgas + 143H2Ogas + H2gas. This reaction has an associated theoretical standard heat of reaction of -124 kJ mol-1 (-29.6 kcal mol-1), which is consistent with -117 kJmol-1 (-28 kcal mol-1) estimated for the hydroxylamine overall heat of decomposition reported previously.
