ON THE MECHANISM OF ION-EXCHANGE IN ZIRCONIUM-PHOSPHATES .30. EXCHANGE OF SILVER ION ON ALPHA-ZIRCONIUM PHOSPHATE Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Crystalline zirconium phosphate exchanges with silver ion from both acetate and nitrate solutions at room temperature. The exchange is nearly quantitative from acetate solutions as the pH of the solutions is relatively high. A single exchanged phase of composition Zr(AgPO4)2H2O occurs over the entire range of loading. Heating the partially loaded exchanger to 200 produces phases of approximate composition ZrAg0.22H1.78(PO4)2 and ZrAg0.75H1.25(PO4)2. These phases are isomorphous with the corresponding sodium ion phases. The affinity of zirconium phosphate for silver ion is greater than for any alkali metal cation. 1980.
