abstract
Saponite and Montmorillonite Al13 pillared clays were subjected to heat treatments up to 75OC. The pillars were found to rehydrate and exhibit enhanced cation and anion exchange capacities. Treatment of the pillared clays with dilute HCI solubilized increased amounts of aluminum accompanied by an increase in surface area and pore size. Treatment of the pillared clays with sulfate or phosphate ion increased the number of Bronsted and Lewis acid sites. 27Al solid-state NMR spectra indicated formation of a -A12O3 type structure for the pillars. 1994, Kodansha Ltd.
