  • The thermodynamics of alkali metal ion exchange on crystalline α-zirconium phosphate have been studied. Li+, Na+, and K+ exchange in acid solution but Rb+ and Cs+ do not. The phases formed depend upon the solution composition and upon the way in which the exchanger can accomodate the different cations in the cavities. The presence of Cs+ was found to drastically reduce the uptake of K+. A proposed mechanism of exchange is given. Enthalpy and entropy changes for the exchange reactions are also presented. The entropy changes of the exchanger phase upon exchange have been found to correlate very well with the changes in hydration of the exchanger. © 1981 American Chemical Society.
