abstract

  • This study investigated mood state and psychological skills of world-ranked female tennis players, and psychological differences between top, middle and bottom-ranked players. A total of 45 players of the Women's International Tennis Association were surveyed in the study. The Profile of Mood States (POMS) and the Psychological Skills Inventory for Sports (PSIS) were administered to the players prior to matches. The study indicated that there were no significant differences in tension, depression, anger, vigour, fatigue, concentration or total mood disturbance across the ranks. However, there was a trend for top-ranked competitors to exhibit greater concentration and motivation with concomitant decreases in confidence and team emphasis than shown among bottom-ranked players. It is concluded that world-ranked female tennis players exhibit mood state patterns and psychological skills similar to athletes in other sports.
