abstract
Classification in psychiatry has often neglected to investigate certain important aspects of taxonomy, such as principles of hierarchy and inclusion. One of the few classifications which have addressed these issues is one proposed by Graham Foulds during the mid-1970s. This hierarchical system, which has attracted a fair amount of research attention outside of the U.S., could be a promising and innovative approach for future classification research. The present article introduces this system and reviews the research conducted using the system over the past decade. 1987.
