MODELING FUTURE CLIMATES FOR NUCLEAR WASTE-DISPOSAL Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • In order to ensure safe long term storage of nuclear waste it is necessary to consider possible consequences of future climate change. A program of long term climate scenario development is now underway. The plan calls for use of a climate model hierarchy because of the large expense incurred in using the most advanced climate models. First a number of extreme but marginally probable climate will be examined with simpler models, then a few selected cases will be examined with the best available general circulation models. Initial evaluation of estimates of future climate change suggest that precipitation increases may not be large enough to endanger the Yucca Mtn. site.
