An electrostatic ion guide has been developed to transmit externally formed ions in chemical ionization mass spectrometry. Transport of ions over a distance of ten or more cm is accomplished with a high efficiency. Our design of the ion guide allows efficient separation of ion from neutral molecules, which provides a relatively simple means to significantly increase the detection sensitivity in chemical ionization mass spectrometry. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
