abstract
Here we discuss some of the problems, but also the potential, of applying the new tool of ocean reanalysis to the problem of estimating the steric contribution to global sea level rise. Our examination focuses on the SODA reanalysis and is limited to the years prior to 2002 due to the time span of the ERA-40 winds. Comparison of our results with the data-only objective analysis of [15] shows qualitative agreement where data is available, but provides different, more variable results in data-poor regions. We conclude that the future is bright for this application of data assimilation.
