Recent progress in scratch & mar testing and evaluation of thermoplastic olefins Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • For over a decade, research efforts at Texas A&M have involved scrutinizing the field of tribology to better define phenomena that have been long-perceived as highly qualitative. As a result, ASTM D7027-05 and ISO 19252 were implemented and the definition of the term "scratch" as implied within these standards has come to be widely accepted within the polymer community. It was also realized that the definitions of "mar" and "abrasion" are quite ambiguous. Through further work, testing and analysis methodologies have been developed in an attempt to provide unique definitions to render these terms more explicit. The physics that distinguish these tribological phenomena will be discussed. Furthermore, a new "machine vision" approach to quantitative analysis of the scratch, mar, and abrasion phenomena will be introduced.
