Investigation of impact fracture mechanisms of polyurethane/urea bumper fascia systems Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The impact fracture mechanisms of both the neat and mica-filled polyurethane/ureas (PUU) are investigated using a novel DN-4PB-CI method, along with TOM and SEM microscopy techniques. It is found that the neat PUU polymer is capable of large scale plastic deformation. However, when mica filler is dispersed in the PUU polymer matrix, the matrix plastic deformation is suppressed. The impact fracture toughness is therefore reduced. The PUU systems, with and without mica modification, appear to be quiet notch radius sensitive. The mica orientation in the PUU/mica material gives an effect on fracture mechanisms only for the blunt crack condition.
