On the geometry and kinematics of the gauge theory of defects for media with microstructure Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The Yang-Mills minimal replacement construct has recently been applied to the non-semisimple local internal symmetry group of a medium with microstructure (Lagoudas, 1989). The microstructure has been modeled in the medium by a set of deformable vector fields. The gauge group is extended to include material (external) symmetries through the introduction of material gauge connections related to the local action of the group of material symmetries associated with the microstructure. Covariant torsion and curvature quantities formed by derivatives of the gauge potentials correspond to defect densities and currents admitted by the vector fields in the deformed configuration, while defects related to disordered material symmetries are described by the material torsion and curvature.
