abstract
The cryogenic leakage through composite laminates used in the manufacture of fuel tanks for reusable launch vehicles was studied numerically. The study involved analysis of cryogen flow through main blocks of resistance in a leakage path namely crack junctions and transverse matrix cracks (TMC). The conductance of crack junction and TMC resistance were analyzed by numerical simulations. It was found that the TMC resistance varies linearly with the off-set distance between the crack junctions in adjacent ply interfaces. The parametric studies were carried out estimate the conductance of a five ply composite. A simplified model was used to analytically estimate the effective conductance of the five ply composite from crack junction and TMC conductance.
