abstract
Some issues arising in the finite element analysis of necking instabilities are addressed within the context of specific problems. In addition to analyses based on classical Mises type constitutive laws, we discuss numerical solutions using constitutive relations that more accurately model plastic slip processes and progressive rupture on the microscale. We illustrate the ability of finite element solutions based on these nonclassical constitutive relations to reproduce essential features of the development of failure in the necked down region. 1984, Elsevier Inc.
