abstract
An alternate approach to incorporate a model of the fracture process into the problem formulation is presented. Such a direct prediction of fracture was pursued for diverse materials and from a variety of perspectives. The framework used in the analyses discussed was the failure characteristics, embodied in a phenomenological constitutive relation that describes separation along one or more cohesive surfaces. Analyses of fast crack carried out was discussed with a focus on issues associated with crack growth along and across interfaces.
