abstract
A review is given of some studies using continuum constitutive relations that are based on physical models of the ductile rupture process, i. e. models of the nucleation, growth and coalescence of microvoids. The material's constitutive description allows for the possibility of a complete loss of stress carrying capacity so that fracture is a natural outcome of the deformation process. Numerical analyses of failure modes in various test specimens and of ductile fracture processes at a crack tip illustrate the capabilities and potential of this approach.
