Electrochemical assessment of corrosion inhibition effect of several chemical formulas on steel and aluminum substrates

The main focus of this work is the selection and assessment of eleven chemical formulas as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel and aluminum substrates exposed in acid environment. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR) were used as prime techniques to quantify and characterize inhibition performance of these chemicals. Charge transfer resistance and polarization resistance were obtained from the fitting of EIS and LPR results. Additionally, potentiodynamic polarization measurements were performed in the blank solution and in the inhibiting solutions of selected formulas. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was also used to characterize the surface morphologies changes in the solution of different chemicals. For carbon steel samples under testing conditions, at least two chemicals show good corrosion inhibition properties; the presence of these formulas caused significant decrease for corrosion current densities, which is due to the inhibition of anodic and/or cathodic process. For aluminum specimen, one formula at high concentration show good corrosion inhibition performance by inhibiting both the anodic and cathodic processes.
