Interactions of Tollmien-Schlichting Waves and Stationary Transient Disturbances Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • Calculations show that stationary optimal disturbances of sufficiently large amplitude are capable of staonizing Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) waves. Additionally, stationary optimal disturbances are expected to lead to significant spanwise modulations of TS waves' fluctuation intensity. Experiments are conducted using a zero-pressure-gradient, flat-plate boundary layer to determine whether the predicted modulations can be realized physically and to determine how various features of the stationary disturbances affect features of the unstable fluctuations. Stationary disturbances generated using a spanwise array of 3D roughness elements and unsteady TS-like disturbances are generated using controlled acoustic waves and a 2D roughness strip. Measurements of the fluctuating velocity field show modulations similar to theoretical predictions. Certain aspects of these modulations amplitudes and distributions can be linked to similar features of stationary velocity field. 2004 by the authors.
