abstract
1999 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. The current understanding of the receptivity of the leading edge to external disturbances is reviewed with special attention paid to the role of free stream sound. Only a brief review of the role of freestream turbulence and vortieity is given because progress has been slow in these areas. Recent advances in the theoretical modeling, direct numerical simulations, and experimental measurements, are discussed. It is shown that aspects of the theory have been validated and the mechanisms of freestream disturbances providing the. initial conditions for unstable waves is better understood.
