  • Samples of steel pipe segments and hard coatings were separately tested for hot gas corrosion resistance and hot erosion resistance by multiple impacts of direct reduced iron (DRI) pellets in a hot erosion testing device and in a pilot plant. Material loss and microscopic observations were used to evaluate both the corrosion and erosion mechanisms. This will help to evaluate the main mechanisms of pipe damage as the conditions for high temperature pneumatic transport of direct reduced iron pellets become more stringent. Corrosion tests were performed in a laboratory reactor with atmospheres composed of hydrogen and carbon monoxide mixtures in order to simulate conditions at the pilot plant. Results from the corrosion tests provided an indication of the suitability of these materials to be used as pipes. Laboratory tests provide useful information on the behavior of different materials at different temperatures ranging from room temperature up to 600°C, and at different impact angles.
