The preconditioning role of the tropical Atlantic in the El Nio/Southern Oscillation's impact on Northeast Brazil rainfall variability Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The state of the tropical Atlantic climate system during the onset and development stages of an El Nio-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) event affects the strength of the ENSO teleconnection to northeastern Brazil (Nordeste) the following boreal spring. The preconditioning role of Tropical Atlantic Variability (TAV) described here advocates for the continued monitoring of Atlantic sea surface temperatures, especially in the western subtropical South Atlantic, starting from a season or two prior to peak ENSO conditions, well in advance of the Nordeste rainy season in boreal spring.
