A SIMPLE SPREADSHEET ROUTINE FOR CALCULATING DEPTH AGE RELATIONS Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Reconstructions of geologic history require that sediment properties be considered with respect to age. However, measurement points and sample locations may be identified by elevation above or below some datum, such as depth down a drillhole, rather than age of the material being examined. The traditional approach to converting sample/measurement depths to ages requires hand plotting a depth/age curve, based on known stratigraphic datum points, which can be used to make age assignments. The AGES worksheet is a simple computer routine which automatically converts depths to ages, and vice versa. It offers a number of advantages. The need for meticulous hand plotting is obviated, and the procedure easily can accommodate large data sets. Because all the steps in the procedure, and the links between them, are preserved, depth/age assignments can be updated quickly and easily as new information becomes available. Finally, the procedure uses a widely available software package and requires no special skills for successful operation. 1992.
