The increasing complexity of manufacturing systems coupled with the emergence of truly global manufacturing enterprises requires the use of novel approaches to facilitate enterprise integration. Specific challenges include (i) the lack of theoretical foundations for enterprise integration and (ii) the absence of mechanisms for knowledge sharing and semantic interoperability. This paper presents a process-centered approach to address these problems. Specifically, the paper describes the theoretical foundations and concept of operation of an integrated architecture for process management, the Adaptive Process Management System (APMS). APMS facilitates information-integrated management of the Product Realization Process (PRP) using a life-cycle perspective. © 2001 by Springer Science+Business Media New York.
