Determining the migratory activity index for a river: An example from the Brazos River, Texas Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Numerous methods have been developed to measure the migration rates of individual meanders, but no method has been developed to date to assess the migratory activity of selected reaches of rivers. A quantitative index for assessing the migratory activity of an entire channel reach was developed to study the effects of flow regulation on the Brazos River, Texas. In addition to measuring the effects of flow regulation on channel stability, this index can be used to determine the location of geologic controls on channel migration, and assess the effects of flow alteration on floodplain biodiversity.
