  • © 2002 Society of Exploration Geophysicists. A three-dimensional finite element solution to the coupled-potential (A; ψ) formulation of Maxwell's di®u-sive equations has been developed for controlled-source electromagnetic prospecting in the near-surface region. The solution is formulated in terms of the secondary (As;ψs) potentials, and is calculated over a simple rectangular tetrahedral mesh. Electric and magnetic fields are recovered with a simple finite di®erence. The results have been tested against known analytic solutions with very promising results, and is currently being tested against other available solutions for more complex conductivity distributions.
